Self Help and Getting My Sh*t Together

Well hello there friends! Aren’t you happy it’s finally Friday? Well I am!!!  I tell you time seems to be flying by (it’s almost mid February), but lately I have been feeling out of wack.  You know when you have those days (or in my case weeks) that you feel like a “Hot Mess” well friends that has been me lately and I need to get myself together. In my search for a self help book that could help me get my sh*t together I found just that book “get your SH*T together” and so far I’m liking it.

This book is written by Sarah Knight. She is  funny, witty and has a no holds bar kind of way of letting you know how to get your shit together and be able to prioritize things and accomplish them so that you can really focus on the important things in life.  She gives you key advice, tips and helps you manage day to day tasks without driving yourself (or anyone around you) nuts.  Warning: she does use curse words in her books, so if you are not OK with that I suggest you find a cleaner version. As I have said before here on the blog, I don’t mind curse words (in fact, I have a big potty mouth!).  Therefore, the cursing in the book is OK by me.

Now, back to me and why I felt the need to buy this book.  Well I have had a lot of  “I can’t even” moments lately and needed something to help me get through this crap phase I am going through right now.  I feel overwhelmed with all the things I need to do; from my daily job to trying to build a small business and everything in between that happens in our daily life.  It’s like where did the time go when I have 100 things to do and no time to do them! I thought I would give this book a read and try to use it to help me out of this rut. So as I am reading this book (no I haven’t finished it because that is something else added to my crazy life right now) I will try to incorporate the strategies to help me get my sh*t together.  Well one can always hope.

So if you feel stuck between a rock and a hard place or just need to get your crap together, this may be a good read for you as well. I will get back to you on how it works for me, but I may need some time to put what I learn into practice.  Thank you for stopping by the blog today and listen to me go on about how I am nuts, but if you read this blog on the regular (thanks to those of you that do) you probably already knew that. 😉

Favorite Beauty Essentials

Well this is a first for me, I’m doing a Favorite Beauty Essentials post. It’s funny because I am not one to wear a lot of make up. Why Maritza?  Well, 1. I don’t really know how to do all that makeup contouring, shadowing, blending, and whatever else to make me look totally different than my regular self. and  2. I ain’t got time for that! My makeup routine is no more than 7 minutes tops and I’m out the door.  Now, that doesn’t mean that I don’t take care of my skin (after all I am 45ish) and good beauty products are a must for every age. First, I wanted to share the absolute best dry shampoo I have ever tried.  If you have oily hair (as I do) dry shampoo is a must unless you want to shampoo your hair everyday. Therefore, I compared these two popular brands and here were my findings:

If you have fine hair (again me) these two dry shampoo’s work well, but the Dove leaves a hair spray type texture and smell to your hair.  Your hair becomes stiff and hard to brush, you can’t even run your fingers through your hair.  I don’t know about you, but I hate that feeling. That is why I don’t use hair spray! Now, the Batiste brand is amazing!! It smells fantastic, it leaves no film or hard residue on your hair and most important it doesn’t make your hair stiff. I can actually run my fingers through my hair and it really works on taking away the oil build up in your hair.  It is definitely #1 in my book. Next, is hair volumizer, again if you have thin hair you know how it can become limp and blah looking (yeah, happens to me almost on the daily) well friends I found one that will get that hair looking full and beautiful.

I happen to stumble across this Schwarzkopf volume root lift in Marshalls’ (to my surprise) while perusing the beauty section of the store one day.  Guess what? It really works well without being too overpowering or stiff. I don’t use it everyday, but when I feel a need a little extra “oomph” in my hair it is my go to volume root lift. Just make sure you only spray your roots and not your full scalp. Been there done that. Now, lets move on to the makeup products shall we. I have tried many brand name makeups and as you can tell that oily seems to be a trademark with me (yup you guessed right, I also have oily skin) and sensitive skin to add to it.  I have become a sort of science experiment when it comes to finding a makeup that doesn’t result in breakouts.  After many years of trying different brands I have found the one that works best for my poor oily, sensitive skin. Have you heard of “it cosmetics”?!

I first tried “iT Cosmetics” a couple years ago as a trial pack (as seen here) that they had during the holidays.  I figured it was a perfect time to try it! They were travel size and the price was just right. If I didn’t like them I hadn’t spent a lot and didn’t have to worry about having all this makeup left over that I would never use. Well, I have to say that I loved it! The makeup is not heavy on your skin and most important it didn’t make me break out.  This makeup line has everything you need, it not only covers, but protects your skin from the suns damage.  Living in Florida I can use all the 50 SPF protection in my makeup without having to add extra creams to my daily morning routine.

What I like best about the “it” line of cosmetics is that their compacts come with the application brush.  I buy my makeup through QVC because if you buy them at other beauty stores you have to buy the brush separate and I can get the brush included at a much lower price.  Besides that the brushes are so soft (you won’t believe how heavenly soft they are) but believe me they are the best brushes I have ever used.  This is the Confidence in a Compact which is a cream compact and I use it during the fall and winter months.  It feels really silky and not heavy (pancake) makeup on your face. It blends in evenly and leaves your skin feeling soft and natural looking for all day wear.

For the spring and summer months I like the powder compact because it is too hot here in Florida to wear anything heavier on your skin. I use the it Celebration Foundation which also has 50 SPF protection for my skin.  It’s a soft powder compact foundation that gives me the coverage and protection my face need for hot Florida days.

Finally, if you didn’t already notice I wear the Medium tone because I have light skin, but it works well and blends in to my skin tone during the summer and winter months. If you have oily or sensitive skin and you are looking for a makeup that will give you coverage without making you break out, I say give “it cosmetics” a try.  Now these are my own opinions and I am not affiliated with “it” or any other product here in any way.  I share with you my peeps what works for me in hope that if you are looking or are in need of a good beauty product I can help. Do you use any of these products? Maybe you have found one that would help me. If you do share them because I would love to hear from you? Well friends thanks for stopping in and visiting me here on the blog today as I share my Favorite Beauty Essentials with you.  See ya again on Friday!   xoxo

Can We Talk?

In the words of the late Joan Rivers “Can We Talk” is the topic today. There has been this buzz on social media lately about comparing ourselves to others and not being authentic. How bloggers and other social media personas post fake pictures to get followers and publicity. While that may be true or not, we need to be candid and transparent about this issue.  If you are one of my blog regulars you know that I am pretty honest about myself here.  If you follow me on Instagram you know my posts are my own. I like to be true to myself and my readers and followers alike. I may not have a large following, but that is OK because those of you that do follow me and read this little blog do it because you truly like it and for that I am very grateful. I may not post magazine worthy pictures of my home because my reality is my home may not be beautiful to others, but it’s beautiful to me.

We don’t all have the funds to go out and spend thousands of dollars making over our homes to please people on social media. Truth is the changes I have made to my home have been to make us happy and no one else.  I began this blogging journey to share my DIY projects, woodworking, sign making, and decorating ideas with others who have similar interest.  It comes from a place of my desire to help others that like to do DIY projects and improve their homes in an easy and frugal way.   I’m a person that likes to create and do things that make my home a happy place for my family and myself. OK now I’m just rambling on…. What I am trying to say is that we are all individuals with ambitions, goals and dreams. In life we will not make everyone happy, but again that is fine because life is about finding your happiness.

Therefore, it doesn’t matter about what others say or have that you don’t or about creating a facade to please others. Truth be told those who love you for you will be there no matter what. Let’s not loose ourselves in this crazy world of being compared to others or trying to live up to standards that are not our own. Be you and focus on what is important in your life, because you don’t owe anything to anyone (unless you do).

Finally, who needs all this negativity in the world? I say we rise above it and be the better person we know we can be and are.  I love this little blog and I have made some really nice friends on IG that support and encourage one another. The point is that there is always going to be people that will try to spread their negative agenda for others to buy into. After all, misery loves company and I rather be around people who want me to succeed than those who want to watch me fail. Again thank you all from the bottom of my heart for stopping by the blog today and have yourself a wonderful weekend. xoxo

I Opened an Etsy Shop

Things have been so hectic here at the city2farmhouse home that in all the madness, I haven’t had the time to share with you my big news. Guys and gals I opened my Etsy shop!! Yes, it’s true I finally did it! I have been wanting to open an Etsy shop for a while now, but was afraid.  Why you might ask?  Well failure and self doubt always lingered in the back of my mind.  I was afraid of not being good enough or of not being successful.  I was doubting myself and doubting whether people would like or buy my creations. Failure and Doubt are two evil words that tried to stop me from my dreams. It’s been almost a year that I began on this new journey of mine. It simply started with creating beautiful things for my home that made me happy, but little did I know others would like what I was doing. As a result, I began making signs from wood and pallets for family and friends and they were the ones that said “I should sell them.”  This year I decided to set goals for myself and to make clear visions what I really wanted to accomplish in my life.  I have an amazing support system of family and friends that support and encourage me to pursue my dreams and achieve my goals. It has been with their help that I decided to set aside my fears and self doubt and take the leap. And you know what? I am so happy I did.  As for now, I’ve listed some of the things I made that were in the my garage, but will be making more pallet and wood signs that will be up soon. I have so many ideas going on in my head that I can barely get any sleep at night thinking about them all.  In the meantime here are some things you can find up on the shop: http://www.etsy.com/city2farmhouse

On this journey of mine I have meet some amazing makers in a community on Instagram that really support each other.  It was less than a year ago that I began this city2farmhouse brand and all the friends I’ve made have encouraged me to believe that I can do this and follow my dreams.  I work hard to make this possible as do so many other wonderful and talented people that have etsy shops.  I hope that fear and doubt don’t stop you from following your dreams, because life is too short to not do what you love and more important spend it with those you love and love you in return. So thank you for supporting me on my journey to achieving my dreams because this little blog is a part of it.

xoxo,

Valentines Day Decor

This weekend I went to my favorite stores you know Kirklands, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and so on. Valentines Day Decor is in full swing not to mention St. Patrick’s decor and I even saw Easter stuff out as well.  It seems like the holidays are all jumbled up together.  You haven’t finished celebrating one holiday and the other is being crammed down your throat. So here I am today shoving some Valentines Day Decor down your throats. I usually don’t decorate for any of these holidays, well not since my daughter became a teenager and started only caring about the candy. So on my shopping escapade I decided to only grab a few items to decorate my tier tray as well as a doormat for my front door. Kirklands was my first stop and I have to say I fell in love with their stuff, but I went in with the mindset of getting a doormat and a small sign for my tray. I thought I would share with my peeps what I saw:

Let me begin with the doormats, which was one of the main reason I went to Kirklands anyway.  They had these doormats and while I found the top one (Please Hide packages From Husband) hilarious. The truth is, in my home it should say “Please Hide Packages from Wife” because the hubs orders more from Amazon than I do. Hahaha, no for realz. Maybe I should pitch that idea to them;) Anyway, I did buy the this one (below). It was so adorable and I couldn’t pass up the Valentine’s themed mat.

Then there were these pillows! I loved these pillows, but as I have shared before here on the blog that as much as I love pillows, my husband hates them. No …correction; he detests them, but is tolerant of my decor choices and appeases me with some throw pillows on the sofa. I have been forewarned that I might have to sleep on the sofa if I bring one more throw pillow into this home.

And the worst part about this pillow controversy is that they are so darn cute (why do they have to be so stinkin’ adorable!) Therefore, I didn’t buy any because my back and sanity are happier with a good night’s sleep. Also, just look at these heart wreaths, aren’t they the most darling things ever.  I just love the pom-poms!  Don’t you?!

I did manage to accomplish my goal of finding a doormat and a small heart that says “Be Mine” for my tier tray. Here is how my tiered tray looks all decorated for Valentines Day. How do you like it?

If you’re wondering where I got some of the stuff on the tray I will tell you. The Kisses “25 cent” sign is from Michaels, the little heart garland (believe it or not) is a Christmas ornament from Kmart, the mugs are of course Rae Dunn, the heart stir sticks are from the Dollar Tree, the kitchen towel is from Target dollar spot, and the crystal heart with the Hersey’s kisses inside is something I’ve had for many years now.

I hope you enjoyed this Valentines Day Decor and keeping with the Valentines theme please watch out for Fridays Blog Post.  I have teamed up with some amazing blogger friends to bring you a Valentines gift guide from our favorite small shops. Make sure you come back and visit me on Friday.  Well friends thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to come and visit me here on this little blog of mine. See ya Friday Friends!  xoxo

Barn Door Entertainment Center

I am so excited today because I finally get to reveal my new Barn Door Entertainment Center. I have been working on painting and staining this piece all last week and it’s finally ready for the reveal.  If you are one of my regular blog readers (thank you) you know that I have mentioned my talented brother-in-law here many times before. He made my side table [here] and my coffee table. He is an amazing woodworker and has been working on making me a barn door entertainment center and it’s now finished. Here is how it looked before I painted it.

This entertainment center is made of pallet wood just like the other pallet table pieces in my living room. I used Rustoleum Chalked Paint in Linen White to paint the wood and the barn doors.

I wanted this piece to match my other pallet wood furniture pieces and decided to stain the bottom and top pieces of wood instead of painting it all white. I used Minwax Stain in Golden Oak to stain both pieces of wood. I know the bottom piece looks darker, but that is due to the fact that the wood on the bottom is a darker shade than the wood on the top.  I like the fact that the top and bottom are different shades, it makes it look like something that was hand-made.

Here is the finished product and I have to say he did an excellent job once again. It is gorgeous and I love how it looks!  Right? All I need to do now is find some items to style it and some baskets inside for storing all my stuff. I think I need to go shopping!

Thanks for visiting me here on the blog today, I will see you here again next week. Have a great weekend friends!

New Year, New Goals

Out with the old year and in with the new year. Happy 2018 everyone! I took a short hiatus from the blog during the Holidays, but now I’m back and ready for 2018.  Before I go on about me, I hope you all had a great Holiday with your family and friends. Are you looking forward to a new year full of new goals, opportunities, and whatever you set yourself to accomplish in 2018?  Here are my rules for this year:

I have a list of goals I have set for myself this new year and I’m ready to go and accomplish them all!

I don’t want to call them resolutions, because we know that resolutions are always broken. I will call them goals because I have set them in my mind as tasks that I must accomplish in this new year, sort of like writing a “to-do” list.  The first of these goals is healthier living (you probably think “Maritza everyone says that in the new year.”)  Well I don’t know about you, but after turning 45(ish) my weight has creeped up on me and it is getting harder and harder to lose it. Therefore, I decided to take charge of my health and weight and do something about it. I have these very close friends of mine that began on this new health style journey last year and their results have been unbelievable. If they can do it, I can do it!!  After all that indulging during the holidays I wanted to give my body a refresh and I began this 3 Day Refresh on Saturday.

This 3 Day Refresh program will help me cleanse from all that delicious junk I ate during the past 2 weeks that has made me bloated and blah!  This program is detailed and lets me know exactly what to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 3 days.

It comes with shakes, and fiber packs to let you detox and get your body back on track to a healthier eating life style.

It also gives you healthy food options (to take the guess work out) and you don’t have to worry about what to eat or not eat for that matter. I began this 3 Day Refresh on Saturday at 150.5 pounds and will after 3 days I am now 4 pounds down.  Now I am not trying to sell you anything, I just wanted to share this journey with you to keep me accountable and make me stay on track. If I know I have to report back on my progress then chances are I will stick to it and accomplish this goal. I have learned that the most important part about having goals is having checkpoints.  Checkpoints are ways of measuring your progress along the way to your goal.  Without checkpoints, it is so easy to lose hope or enthusiasm for obtaining your goal.  What goals have you set for yourself this New Year? I would love to hear them. Maybe we can do them together and accomplish them as a team and not as individuals.  Hit me up with your 2018 dreams, goals, and what you are determined to accomplish this year. As always friends thanks for stopping by the blog today. Here is to 2018, lets make it the best one yet!

xoxo,

Maritza

Christmas Home Tour

Happy Friday!  Can you believe that Christmas is this coming Monday?  Where did the time go?  I have so much to do, and I know I’m not alone when I say that.  Anyways, I thought I would give you a little Christmas Home Tour of my home before the holiday ends. Now, I am not a decorator and I don’t claim to be one, but Christmas is my favorite time of year and I love decorating for the holiday.  I would like to say that my Christmas decor style is traditional. I like the traditional red and green colors that are associated with Christmas, and I love using them in my home decor.  Lets begin with my living room.

Our Christmas tree is an artificial pre-lit tree (Yes I know!! Why don’t I have a real tree? …Santa is shedding a tear, etc.) that’s about ten years old.  Anyway, this year half the lights were not working anymore so I decided to take them off.  BIG mistake! Did you know that those lights are clamped on the branches with about a million plastic clamps that took over 2 hours to take off.  Yeah lesson learned, next time I’ll just add lights onto the existing ones.  Also, all that tearing off of the clamps and lights made the tree lose about a quarter of it’s needles (it was like having a real tree shedding) and now the tree has huge gaps in it.  It was so frustrating I wanted to throw it out the door, but I didn’t because the hubs said “No New Tree”.  LOL!!  But seriously, trees are so expensive nowadays I don’t know if I want a new one that badly.

As you can see my DIY lamp [here] has been very versatile in decorating for the different seasons this year.  I added green and red ornaments (balls) to it and I think it looks really nice. Don’t you agree? The Santa and Mrs. Claus were a Kmart find many years ago.  They match the stockings.  By the way can you spot the elves in this picture? Those elves are always popping up everywhere:)

I have a little obsession with red vintage trucks and try to use them as much as I can get away with in my Christmas decor.  Also, anything “BELIEVE” themed is a decor trend in my home as well.  Even though, my daughter is a teenager that now knows the truth about Santa we are still a family that believes in the magic and spirit of Christmas. Oh and don’t get me started on how my daughter loves anything with an elf related theme.

I have to admit that of all the decorated spaces (besides my village) my favorite is the entryway. I just love that little flocked tree from Walmart, along with the garland. The fabric Christmas trees are from Marshalls, as is that cute little gnome and the sled. Finally, what is any Christmas space with out a vintage red truck, so here is another one.

In my dining room you will find the buffet where I have my Christmas Village which is my all time favorite decorative item in my home. But don’t forget the popular tiered tray that is a staple in any farmhouse home decorating. It’s all decorated with Christmas and Rae Dunn.

Furthermore, my little hutch with some of my Rae Dunn Collection which you have seen before on previous posts. Along with some sneaky elves in the mix….

Lastly, here is my kitchen.  Now I don’t have a lot of decorations in the kitchen (even though my husband would disagree) I believe it’s not about over doing it, but more about what you love and what makes you happy. I love Christmas time and I love decorating and buying decor that I love and know I will use for a long time. It is not easy seeing all those decked out beautiful homes on social media and wanting to do the same in yours. Believe me friends, I see all those gorgeous homes decorated in white or neutral tones and they are really amazing and beautiful, but truth is that’s not me.  I know I wish I had the money and talent to make my home look like a magazine cover, but I’m also realistic and like to sit on my sofa, eat at my table and cook in my kitchen (bahaha, the husband does the cooking here, but you know what I mean). Now don’t get me wrong I love looking at those beautifully styled homes and they are a great inspiration for decor newbies like me. I am just saying it’s OK not being perfect and there is nothing wrong with that either. Because truth be told I am far from perfect and I’m doing pretty good. Well I think so anyway..

I hope you  enjoyed this Christmas Home Tour of mine it’s nothing fancy, but it’s my cozy little home. Thank you for stopping by the blog today it really means the world to me that you take the time out of your busy day to visit. Have yourselves a Merry Christmas with your lovely families and I will see you again next week on the blog. Merry Christmas from our home to yours!!!

xoxo,

Maritza

Holiday Craft Project Ideas

I’m back today with some really simple Holiday Craft Project Ideas.  If you didn’t know, Christmas trees have come a long way baby and flocked trees are all the rage. As you know, the mini Christmas tabletop trees can cost from $7.99 and up.  However, I come up with a cute and inexpensive way to flock a mini decorative tree. I went to the Dollar Tree and found this cute 12″ tree for $1. They are the perfect size for decorating tabletops and decided to create my own little flocked tree for under 5 bucks!  First, I went to the Dollar Tree and picked up a mini tree.  Then I bought some snow-in-a can spray and sprayed the tree. I sprayed the the tree 2 times, letting the snow dry completely between sprays. Here’s how it turned out:

How cute is that flocked tree! I inserted it into a cute Santa tin and added a Santa hat that I also found at the Dollar Tree.  I think it came out pretty nice.  Here’s how it looks on my hutch. What do you think?

The next holiday craft project idea was jazzing up those cute little ceramic houses from the Target Dollar Spot section. I think everyone went crazy for those little houses and I made them look a little more Christmas(y) by adding glittered snow to them. I used mod podge, and clear glitter to spice them up just a bit.  As you can see they were just plain ceramic white in color.

I used a small brush to brush on the mod podge and then sprinkled on the glitter to any place on the houses and tree that would get snowfall (if it were snowing in real life).

Just look at the difference it makes with the glitter. Just add the tea lights inside and they glisten and look so pretty. Don’t you agree?

Now for the last holiday craft project idea. When I went to the Fancy Flea last month, there was a vendor that made the cutest snowmen from blocks of wood. I wish I would have gotten her name to give her credit in this post, because her idea was so cute. I really wanted to share it with you on the blog today. She painted the blocks white and then drew a face and put mini pom-poms as the buttons. All you do is stack them up to create your block snowman.

I used wood glue to glue the wooden blocks together and painters tape to hold them in place while they dry. I added the snowman to my tiered tray Christmas decor and just look how stinkin cute it is!   What an easy project you can do with the kiddos and they can create their own individualized block snowman.  I love this idea, it is one of my favorite holiday crafts.

I hope you enjoyed these Holiday Craft Project Ideas that you can do with your kiddos our just maybe yourself. They are all quick and easy that can be done without spending a lot of money and ,if you know me, I love saving money whenever I can. Well friends, thank you for stopping by the blog today, it really means a lot to me. Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram and you can also find me on Pinterest.
